Even though I run a beauty and wellness blog, I know very well that women are so much more than their looks.
We are made up of our habits, our quirks, the secrets we keep, the immense love we hold, and all the good and bad that comes with being a woman.
But being a woman also comes with a desire to look good, and I think there is nothing wrong with that.
As a woman, I want to be attracted to myself and I want to present myself with attractive femininity to the world.
To me, your meter of attractiveness isn’t defined by your genes or your face structure. It’s defined by your habits.
And while there are so many things you can do to look and feel more beautiful, all of that effort can turn to dust with just one off-putting habit that dulls your vibe (and is often also unhealthy).
So, in this post, I want to help you recognize any unattractive habits that you might be holding onto, so you can let them go, with grace and without shame.
This is nothing to be embarrassed about. You’ll see me admit to some of these myself. We’re in this together, pretty woman. Let’s take a look:
12 Habits That Can Make A Woman Look Unattractive
1. Biting Your Nails
Nail-biting was hands-down my worst habit as a teen. I would sit in class or watch TV and just start chewing without even realizing it.
It made my hands look so messy. My nails were always uneven (and painful too), and it made me look so anxious all the time.
I finally stopped by painting my nails regularly. When they looked pretty, I didn’t want to ruin them.
It took a few months to quit, but I haven’t gone back since!
If you are guilty of nail biting, then you can try cuticle oil and get regular manicures.
You can also get some press-ons done to keep your hands looking intentional and clean. It really helps!
2. Being Lazy With Your Hairwash
Oily and limp hair can instantly drag your whole look down, and let’s not forget, it can also carry bad odour.
Thankfully, my mom was strict about this growing up, and I still wash my hair on alternate days.
Even if I’m not going anywhere, I feel 10 times better with fresh and clean hair.
But I know that hairwash isn’t fun for every girl, and some may not be in regular habit of washing their hair.
You can definitely tackle this problem with dry shampoo, but it isn’t good to rely on it too often.
Find a hair wash routine that suits your lifestyle and start sticking to it.
Alternate days is best, but if your hair is too dry and you aren’t too active, you can keep it to two hair washes a week (no less than that, please).
3. Stepping Outside With Dirty Shoes
This one used to fly under my radar. I’d spend time getting dressed, doing my makeup, only to throw on crusty sneakers or sandals with mystery stains.
Uh, that’s a big big no. Shoes say a lot about you and your lifestyle.
Clean shoes scream classy and elegant, while dirty shoes can make you look lazy and bad.
These days, I use a shoe-cleaning kit and wash my most-worn pairs every couple of weeks. It has racheted up my confidence so much. My outfits look so much better with clean shoes.
Keep your go-to pairs clean and invest in a neutral shoe that matches almost everything. It helps so much!
4. Wearing Bad Makeup
Bad makeup can mean a number of things here:
- Unblended lines
- Mismatched foundation
- Overdrawn brows
- Cakey products
Your products don’t always have to be expensive, but they do need to work for your skin.
When you wear makeup, do it right.
Learn your undertones, invest in good base products, and always check your makeup in natural light before heading out.
If you are a beginner at makeup, it’s good to practice in your free time and take tips from women in your circle who are good at makeup.
Or you could always just go bare-faced, you know.
Raw beauty is always attractive, and it’s so much better than walking around with wrongly done makeup.

5. Not Using Deodorant (Especially If You Sweat A Lot)
We don’t always smell ourselves, but other people do.
I’m a naturally sweaty person and cannot skip deodorant. Ever.
It’s not just about smell either. It’s about feeling clean and put together, which a deodorant always helps you with.
You should try different kinds (spray, stick, natural) until you find one that works. And yes, reapply mid-day if needed.
I use Nivea roll on deodorant. It’s easy to carry, fun to use, and has the best smell ever! Also has underarm whitening properties, so it’s a no-brainer for me.
6. Licking Your Lips Too Much
This is such a sneaky habit that I see so many women doing.
You might think you’re moisturizing your lips by licking them, but constant licking dries your lips out even more.
This can cause chapping, flaking, and biting. Not cute at all.
I used to do this back in school, and only caught it while watching myself in a video. It made me appear so anxious and unorganized, I vowed to never do it again.
How can you stop? It’s easy, really. Just keep a hydration balm or gloss on you at all times, and reapply it whenever you feel your lips going dry
I love using tinted lip balms that make me feel pretty and protected. It’s always a great choice.
7. Not Keeping Your Toes Clean
You might think, “Who’s even looking at my feet?” But trust me, girlfriend, people notice.
I learned this the hard way as a 14-year old when another girl pointed out my toes during dance practice.
God, I wanted the Earth to swallow me whole. But since then, no dirty toenails for your girl.
Dirty toenails, cracked heels, or chipped polish can throw off your whole vibe, especially if you’re wearing open-toed shoes or sandals.
This doesn’t even come under fancy pedicures. It’s just basic hygiene and grooming, which you can easily do.
Do this once a week: Scrub your feet in the shower, remove all the dirt stuck under your toe nails afterward, and trim, please.
Afterward, throw on a fresh coat of polish or clear gloss, and you shall have a pair of pretty feet!
8. Not Smiling Enough or Looking Too Serious
For some women, smiling and laughing comes very naturally, and people find them very attractive because of it.
Now, not all of us can be chirpy 24/7, but keeping a straight face all the time can’t be good either, both for your social presence and your mental health.
It makes you look…well, uptight, for lack of another word.
Your smile is a gift, a thing of beauty that you can actually tap into freely and as frequently as you want. Don’t keep it hidden from the world.
Be more smiley, let yourself laugh out loud, and help your inner self be more free in this world.
Not only will it enhance your energy in a social setting, but it will also help you be happier, which is always attractive.
9. Having A Lazy Posture
Bad posture isn’t something we do intentionally or out of laziness, but it’s a habit that just sneaks up on you.
You might not even realize you’re slouching at your desk or walking with your shoulders hunched. But this can make you look less sharp and underconfident.
Your posture speaks before you even say a word.
Not to mention, it is also really bad for your health and can cause body pain and discomfort.
When you walk, stand, and sit tall, you give off calm confidence, and your body is also at its best throughout the day. It’s something worth working on, for sure.
10. Not Grooming Your Eyebrows
Removing your hair from any part of your body is a personal choice. But there’s just something about ungroomed and hair eyebrows that take attention off your facial features.
Eyebrows might be small, but they hold a lot of power over your overall appearance.
When they’re overgrown, uneven, or unshaped, they can make you look tired, angry, or just messy, even when everything else is in place.

Find a shape that suits your face (arched, round, sharp), and stick to regular upkeep. You can do your eyebrows by tweezing, threading, waxing, or trimming.
I personally like to get them done at the salon by threading. The shape is much cleaner and the hair don’t grow back for 2-3 weeks.
Also, brush your eyebrows often. It will keep them in place and make a ton of difference, I swear.
11. Wearing Clothes With Creases
You could be wearing the cutest outfit ever, but if it’s wrinkled, it will look like you just rolled out of bed.
Creased clothes send the message that you didn’t fully show up for yourself.
But a quick steam or iron can completely change how polished and attractive you look.
Ironing all your clothes in one go can be time-taking, and the creases can reappear when the clothes are lying in the cupboard.
So, you can just iron your clothes right before you need to wear them. Hardly takes time.
I never used to enjoy ironing my clothes, but now I make myself do it the moment I pull out an outfit for outdoors. I have even started enjoying it, what a miracle.
12. Constantly Complaining About Your Looks
Venting and talking to a safe friend about negative body image is one thing. It’s needed at times to let out your thoughts and insecurities.
But complaining about your looks is different, an unattractive habit that may be the worst one on this list.
I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being aware of your flaws. We all got them.
But putting yourself down all the time isn’t just unattractive, it’s sad to witness. You’re not being humble, you’re being unfair to yourself.
Also, if you always point out your flaws in front of others, it can be draining for them and make you seem less confident than you are.
Confidence is one of the most attractive things a woman can wear.
So, please, don’t badmouth yourself. Speak kindly about yourself, even on the days you don’t feel your best. Your body listens, trust me.
